“We think alike, gorgeous,” Harvey said.

“So, you’re not upset that I called while you’re working?”

“Am I ever upset when you call me?”

“No.”

“I’m glad you did call,” he said. “I gave Eddie the bare bones, no pun intended, of this theory so he can start working on it. I’ve got Nate and Jimmy chasing after the bank robber. We think we’ve got a positive ID this time, and they may be able to bring him in. I’m heading back to the station now and brainstorm with Eddie and Tony, but I’d like your thoughts.”

“That’s very flattering,” Jennifer said. “I think Tony was really the one who saw it first.”

“You’re an ex officio member of the Priority Unit,” Harvey said. “There are so many leads to follow, it’s hard to know where to go first.”

“Borrow some patrolmen from the day sergeant,” she recommended. “If you’ve got the Navy reports, you should be able to track down Daniel Sanford or some of his relatives, and you might be able to contact Marcus Rutledge. And look for the people who witnessed the new will. But I think you should get some uniformed officers and send them over here. Canvas the neighborhood. Find out how long all the neighbors have lived here, and if they knew Mr. Fuller, and if they thought he’d changed at some point, or looked different suddenly—got glasses or a toupee or something. Hey!” She stopped as a new thought hit her.

“What, baby?”

“Ask Mr. Bailey.”

“Of course!” Mr. Bailey had owned the Larsons’ house for years. He and his wife Flossie must have known Mr. Fuller.

“It makes me wonder how well Ralph Penninger knew him, too,” Jennifer said.

“And Bud and Janice,” Harvey added.

“We could have a block party and have everyone give us their impressions of Mr. Fuller,” Jennifer suggested, getting into the idea.

“No, I think we’ll let the patrol officers handle it, gorgeous.”

“Just a thought.”

“Keep having thoughts. You’ve had several good ones today.”

An hour later, a cab arrived at the house. The driver rang the doorbell.

“I have a delivery for Jennifer Larson,” he told Abby.

Jennifer moved in behind her, with Connor on her shoulder. “I’m Mrs. Larson.”

“Then this is for you, ma’am.”

Abby opened the door, and the driver held out a bouquet of narcissus and tulips and an envelope.

Jennifer stared for a moment, then reached to take the envelope. “Thank you.”

Abby carried the flowers into the kitchen and got the mayor’s vase from the cupboard.

“They’re beautiful,” Jennifer said.

When Abby was done arranging the flowers, Jennifer handed her the baby and opened the envelope.

“To the most wonderful woman in the world. Meet me at Bleeker’s for lunch? Harvey.”

“Wow!” said Abby. “You’d better get dressed.”

Jennifer looked down at her jeans and T-shirt, and the burp cloth over her shoulder. “You don’t think I’d pass muster at Bleeker’s?”

“Get moving!” Abby yelled. “I’ll keep Connor.”
